The Langham, London, an icon on the London luxury hotel scene, is shining brightly thanks to an innovative lighting control technology and dimming solution from Helvar.

Opened in 1865, The Langham, London is steeped in 152 years of history and is situated in the heart of the West End. With a rich heritage, the hotel delivers exceptional hospitality, offering 380 rooms and suites, with 15 function rooms, Chuan Body + Soul – an urban retreat with pool, Artesian cocktail bar, and the famous Roux at The Landau restaurant – meaning that the hotel is celebrated for its outstanding level of service.

As part of the multi-million pound restoration at the hotel, Helvar’s lighting control products were installed in the spa, bar, corridors and the newly built pool area of the hotel to control the stunning dimming and lighting scenes, as well as creating the ultimate ambient hospitality experience for the guests.  Lighting designers, Kate and Sam, specified the Helvar solution and worked with electrical contractors, Ambient Electrical for this project.

The wet areas posed a challenge for the lighting designers to ensure protection for the user and the lighting. Due to the scale of the project, the ability to centralise the lighting control was also a key element of the lighting design brief.

A lighting design solution was required to meet the specific requirements of the hotel and, as a result, a bespoke solution has been created with the ability to control different lighting scenes to suit the setting. The Helvar lighting control system met the needs of the project and provided a user-friendly system for staff.

Helvar’s Imagine 920 router provided a building block to integrate the DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) based lighting control systems installed in the hotel. The lighting control system has been designed around DALI, an open protocol system to provide future proof system architecture.

The DIGIDIM 454, a 4 channel DIN rail mounted trailing-edge dimmer is especially suited for this to type of hotel lighting where flexible control is required. This system is suitable for various control uses, from simple LED dimming to multiple scene-setting programmes which can be set, stored and recalled at the touch of a button.

A 474 Digidim 4-channel ballast controller and a 498 Digidim 8 channel x 10A relay unit with DIN-rail mounting have been installed to handle short-lived high peak in-rush currents.
