A reliable and robust torch is an essential tool for any electricianespecially in these dark and miserable winter months. PE’s Dan Tovey shines a light on the PS-FL7 from Unilite.
At any time of year the inspection torch will be a regular fixture an electrician’s arsenal, whether it’s to help with a quick survey of a consumer unit in a dark utilities cupboard or peering into an attic or above a ceiling panel. However, in these short winter days with precious little daylight, the need for a reliable and effective portable light source becomes all the more essential to everyday work.
The minimum requirement for tradesmen in these scenarios is that the torch provides enough light to allow for a full and accurate inspection of the area. In this basic function the PS-FL7 from Unilite certainly delivers. Using a Cree LED chip the flashlight delivers 500 lumens of bright white light. The reflector and AR coated toughened glass lens gives a bright central spot with a smooth light spread ensuring this flashlight is suited for focused inspection work as well as lighting up large areas.

The torch has three functions. One press of the ‘on’ button activates the main beam. Another press switches to a dipped beam. A final press switches to defence strobe mode, a safety feature which allows the user to attract attention should they find themselves injured and incapacitated on site.
Like all tools, a torch ultimately proves its value through its ability to handle the rigours of a busy work site. This is where the PS-FL7 stands apart. Designed to deliver critical lighting for industrial work, the flashlight is made of a tough nylon-glass polymer offering excellent resistance against shock, impact, heat and corrosion. Manufactured to IP68 standards for dust and water protection, the torch is specified to be fully site proof, offering reliability in the most hostile and temperamental working conditions.
While durability was clearly high on the agenda when developing the PS-FL7, Unilite have also added a number of features geared towards the comfort and convenience of the professional user. The torch features a high visibility yellow body, easy to identify in a tool bag or dark environment. The rubberised textured grip provides that extra comfort and stability in hand and the textured ‘on’ button located at the base of the tool allows for easy thumb activation to switch through functions quickly. The torch is powered by four AA Duracell batteries and can operate continuously for five hours on one set.
