The Diary of an Inventor: The journey behind becoming a successful inventor

For this edition of The Diary of An Inventor, we’ll be speaking to Sam Horseman at Super Rod about the journey behind becoming a successful inventor. As the first point of contact for any inventors reaching out to Super Rod, Sam will be providing insight on the process – from the initial idea to a successful product launch.

When an inventor approaches you with an idea, what are the first steps?

Understanding the idea in detail is important. We usually start with a meeting where the inventor explains their concept, inspiration behind the idea, the problem it solves, key features and functionality, what makes it unique compared to existing solutions and any research they may have done. If they have sketches or prototypes, those help too. At this stage, we also discuss goals and explain the process we go through from idea to product launch.

What should inventors prepare before coming to you?

While we can work with early-stage ideas, the more preparation, the better. Ideally, inventors should have a clear description of their idea and its benefits. Providing research on existing patents to ensure their concept is unique would be helpful. On-site experience using their invention and feedback as a trade professional provides the most valuable insight, so we’d love to hear about how their idea has helped them.

What does the product development process look like from start to finish?

Concept evaluation
Understanding the idea and potential market. We evaluate how the invention would align with Super Rod’s values of time-saving, safety and problem solving. Utilising our experience of the market, we can help add value to initial concepts.

Feasibility study
Technical and financial viability assessment. We work with our manufacturing team to come up with the most efficient way to make the concept/idea. We then assess the financial viability of the project based on cost estimations.

Design and prototyping
Creating initial sketches, CAD models, sourcing materials and a working prototype.

Testing and refinement
Checking functionality, safety, and durability.

Production planning
Once we’re happy with a final prototype we’ll begin planning for production.

Patents
If the product has the potential to be protected by a patent, we can complete this process. It’s not essential to have a patent before speaking with us, however.

Market entry strategy
Helping with branding, packaging, merchandising, and distribution plans and all marketing activities. Each stage requires collaboration, and the timeline varies depending on complexity. We develop a launch plan and set out a clear guide to distribution. The consumer is always our focus and at the heart of everything we do.

How long does it take to develop a product from idea to market?

Development from start to launch can take 18 months but this can vary depending on the product, prototyping, testing, and regulatory approvals. We always set realistic milestones, and expectations.

What challenges should inventors consider?

a) Costs – Processes can be expensive.

b) Development – Prototypes rarely work perfectly on the first try, so expect adjustments.

c) Market readiness – Market research is critical.

d) Intellectual property protection – Patents and trademarks take time/money.

What role does collaboration play in the development process?

Collaboration is essential. Inventors bring the vision, and we bring the technical expertise to make it real. We work together on the project. Feedback is crucial, as sometimes an idea needs to evolve based on testing and market feedback.

Finally, any tips for would-be inventors?

Be patient, do your research, and stay flexible. Not every idea is feasible in its original form, but with the right strategy and guidance, most concepts can be refined into something viable and successful.
