Having recently undergone a total upgrade of their lighting schemes to LED, two primary schools in Surrey are reaping the benefits with reduced operational costs and improved lighting levels, thanks to new lighting solutions from Ovia.
Decarbonisation goals
Kingswood Primary School is a small village primary school occupying extensive grounds in Lower Kingswood in Surrey. Worplesdon Primary School is a much larger school located in Guildford.
While they may be very different in terms of size, both schools are committed to playing their parts in the decarbonisation of their schools in partnership with Surrey County Council (SCC).
The first phase of this work has been the upgrading of the lighting systems throughout the schools, replacing old and inefficient fittings with LED replacements. With all areas of the schools to benefit from the lighting upgrade, a broad selection of Ovia fittings were specified to satisfy the various requirements that the different rooms/areas of the schools called for.
All classrooms, corridors, stairwells and cloakroom facilities were included, along with the hall, kitchen, reception areas, offices, staff rooms, store rooms, plus libraries, IT and music rooms. The provision for emergency lighting and external lighting was also part of the project.
Responsible for specifying and installing fittings for the LED lighting upgrade was Stuart Gibson, Divisional Manager with Niblock Electrical Services, a specialist electrical division within Niblock Building Contractors, working on domestic, commercial, maintenance, fire alarms/emergency lighting and EV charging projects, and operating across London and the South East regions.
Stuart has worked with Ovia for a number of years and has installed a variety of the company’s fittings across numerous commercial projects.
Lighting solutions from across Ovia’s vast collection have been installed including products from the commercial, utility, emergency and floodlighting ranges. These included:
Inceptor A-Lite – a range of 4 and 5ft LED linear battens that are available in standard, microwave sensor and emergency versions, and in a choice of wattages – 17, 25, 32, 50 and 60 W. They all include a CCT (correlated colour temperature) switch – a built-in, three position switch to allow instant change of the colour temperature.
Inceptor U-Lite – a slimline, non-corrosive utility LED luminaire, designed to offer protection against the elements. With a removable diffuser and gear tray, the Inceptor U-Lite ensures a hassle-free installation. It comes in three different lengths: 1,200, 1,500, and 1,800mm and each length is available in a single lamp and a twin lamp equivalent output. It is suitable for wall, ceiling or suspension mounting with adjustable fixing centres.
Inceptor Duo – a sleek, up and down dimmable linear luminaire that offers installers and their clients a complete custom dual lighting solution and is perfect for accentuating design features both high and low.
It’s available in two lengths – 1,200 and 1,500 – and two wattages – 42 and 56 W. The luminaire features a dual CTT switch – OFF, cool white, warm white and day light, and the up and down lights can be controlled separately. It is dimmable and emergency versions are available.
Inceptor Slate Backlit – a premium range of TP(a) rated backlit LED panel lights with a low, <19 UGR diffuser, making them suitable for a range of installations and working environments. They come with pre-wired push-fit 3-Pole Flow connector, making for quick and easy installation.
They’re designed to fit standard 600 x 600 mm panel sizes, making them ideal retro fits for existing, less efficient lighting options. The 30 W range includes Standard; 3 in 1 Dimmable; Low-Glare, plus a 3 in 1 Dimmable, Low-Glare option.
Evo Orb – this LED bulkhead with a distinctive 113 mm depth provides stylish and effective illumination. It features an IP65 rating for excellent protection against dust and water, adjustable colour temperature controls for customisable lighting, and comes with a five-year warranty, ensuring reliable performance and durability.
Pathfinder – an extensive range of powerful and robust, metal LED floodlights, providing a modern solution www.electricalcharity.org for retrofits and new installations alike. The range comprises standard floodlights as well as versions with Photocell and PIR sensors.
In total the Pathfinder range offers 40 floodlight options from 10 – 300 W, with fittings up to 50 W available in both black and white finishes and in warm white and cool white colour temperature options.
Commenting on the results, Niblock’s Stuart Gibson concluded: “We’re delighted with the results, as the new lighting systems have significantly improved the overall brightness and ambiance of both schools, creating a more productive and comfortable atmosphere for all.
“The professionalism and dedication of both teams throughout the project was exceptional, and we look forward to future collaborations with Surrey County Council and Ovia Lighting.”
