ROBUS lighting products help a top university enhance its green credentials

We learn more about how the use of ROBUS products has helped one of Ireland’s top universities to further enhance its green credentials.

Dublin City University (DCU), a campus located in the heart of Dublin, strives for a sustainable campus. A registered participant of the national Green Campus programme, run by An Taisce and The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), DCU consistently demonstrates innovative schemes on campus to embed sustainable solutions that will result in financial savings while also reducing its carbon footprint.

Auditorium

Having made the decision to retrofit the existing auditorium, DCU needed to replace the old PLs double light fittings as they were dark, unsustainable, and expensive. Instead, the university required a more sustainable, energy saving lighting solution.

Working in conjunction with Emma Carter, ROBUS Area Sales Manager, DCU opted to use ROBUS LED MORPH downlights because their aesthetic matched the look and feel of the auditorium, giving it a professional and elegant interior. Additionally, DCU needed the option to dim the light fittings as the auditorium is used for lectures with PowerPoint presentations, videos etc. The auditorium is also fitted with a DALI command centre for the fittings which controls the lighting.

Because the standard ROBUS LED MORPH downlight isn’t dimmable, the ROBUS Customised Conversions department worked on this project to enhance its functionality, producing 97 x Dali Dimmable MORPH downlights for the auditorium. The team also converted 10 x Dali Dimmable MORPHs to work as emergency fittings.

Converted units connected to a DALI bus were immediately visible to the DALI command centre in the auditorium and it now has the option for eight different lighting scene settings.

The new fit out has given the auditorium a modern update and the light fittings are also more energy efficient and sustainable than those previously employed. The feedback so far from lecturers and students has been positive, with improvements in the brightness and lighting quality very noticeable.

Sports Arena

At the same time as the retrofit to the auditorium, DCU also decided to renovate its Sports Arena. The Sports Arena hosts a variety of important events, such as Karate tournaments, basketball games, and badminton tournaments, so very bright, energy efficient light fittings that would sufficiently light all areas were required.

Once again, ROBUS was able to provide a solution with 36 x SONIC Highbays installed in the Sports Arena. These products are strong and durable with a high impact rating that means they aren’t easily damaged if knocked by sports equipment. The Highbays can be switched by PIR element so they only turn on when the Sports Arena is in use, ensuring high energy saving costs due to the fact that light fittings aren’t left switched on unnecessarily.

ROBUS continually invests in the creation and development of practical low energy lighting solutions, making the products ideal for establishments that want to improve their carbon footprint and realise significant energy savings at the same time.
