We put the questions to CHUMPFix inventor, Kieran Pye

Having launched his brand new innovation to much fan-fare at the end of January, we put the questions to Kieran Pye, the inventor of CHUMPFix, to find out more about the product and the benefits it can offer to electrical professionals.

Q. How easy is it to fit the CHUMPFix and why is it faster than usual methods?

It’s much easier than plugs and screws – you simply drive the screws through the plasterboard and into the CHUMPFix. As there’s no need to drill or install plugs, every time you use the CHUMPFix you’ll essentially be saving time. It works perfectly with lathe and plaster but it may be the case that you need to use longer screws as the plaster in these walls can be very thick.

Q. Where can CHUMPFix be used?

CHUMPFix can be used to fix most surface-mounted fittings, such as pendants, smoke alarms, chandeliers, ceiling light fittings, wall light fittings, pull cord switches, surface-mounted sockets (both metal and plastic), fire call points, surface-mounted switches, as well as many others. The unit can also be used to complete plasterboard repairs.

A common application that we’re finding from the product is electricians using it to change a pendant to a decorative light fitting (in a new build home, for example). Customers have commented at how shocked they are by the speed of the work and cleanliness involved, with next to no dust. This offers a massive time saving on both the work and the making good.

As the product gains traction, we’re having new applications presented to us all the time, including securing a light through a Victorian ceiling rose, attaching bulkhead lights to ceiling tiles, fitting radiators and securing a smoke alarm over a 75 mm hole in the ceiling.

Q. How tough is the CHUMPFix?

The CHUMPFix is designed to hold a whole array of fittings to plasterboard walls and ceilings. The handle is designed to be strong so it can withstand multiple bends and will not pull though the CHUMPFix during installation.

Q. How many CHUMPFixs are contained in a packet and what colours are available?

There are five CHUMPFixs in each packet. The product is currently only available in green.

Q. What size screws are best for use in CHUMPFix and how many screws do you get?

We supply 4 mm screws to provide the best balance between installation and strength of fixing. There are ten screws in each pack of CHUMPFix which will allow for two screws for each CHUMPFix.

Q. What material is CHUMPFix made of?

CHUMPFix is made of nylon as this is tougher than the usual polypropylene that most wall fixings, including yellow, red and brown plugs, are made from. This makes the fixing stronger while keeping the CHUMPFix thin and easy to use.

Q. Can CHUMPFix be used more than once?

Yes. There are many holes in the CHUMPFix and each hole should only be used once. To hold the plate for a second use the second square hole can be used with a piece of wire, or the handle can be pushed out of the hole during first use.

Q. Is CHUMPFix recyclable as a product, and is the packaging also recyclable?

CHUMPFix is made out of nylon, which is a tough plastic that can be recycled at most household waste facilities. It should not be placed in domestic recycling collection bins. We’ve made the packaging primarily out of cardboard, which is easily recyclable.

Q. Where can electricians purchase CHUMPFix from?

We’ve already secured some distribution through electrical wholesaler stockists, so make sure you ask your local wholesaler about the product. We’ll also have more updates and stockists to share over the next few months. If you can’t access the product through your wholesaler, it can be purchased through our online shop – https://chumptools.com/shop
