What are the features and benefits of a new AFDD solution?

On the eve of the release of its new KCM AFDD, Tom Jones, Channel Partner Director at Kempston Controls, takes a deeper dive into some of the features and benefits of the product.

Following the purchase of the original Holyhead factory in 2021, Kempston Controls Manufacturing proudly became custodians of the MEMSHIELD 1 & 2 ranges, which have since been rebranded as the MEM Classic 1 & 2 ranges.

Building on this legacy, we’re now excited to announce the latest product to sit alongside the MEM Classic range – the KCM AFDD. We believe this launch will provide an ideal solution to the legacy product range, offering customers greater choice, flexibility and a sustainable option to extend the life of their existing MEMSHIELD 2 distribution boards.

A growing arc

Arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) are becoming increasingly vital in modern electrical systems, driven by the growing emphasis on safety regulations and the need to prevent electrical fires caused by dangerous arc faults.

As electrical infrastructures grow more complex and power demands continue to rise, the risks associated with arc faults in residential, commercial, and industrial environments have become a significant concern.

Current market trends show a heightened focus on fire prevention and system reliability, fuelled by regulatory frameworks such as the UK’s 18th Edition regulations, which emphasise the importance of advanced safety measures like AFDDs.

With the introduction of the KCM AFDD alongside the MEM Classic range, Kempston Controls is set to bridge this gap by offering an easy-to-integrate solution that combines cutting-edge technology with the reliability and legacy of the MEM Classic brand, allowing the end user to leave the original MEM MEMSHIELD 2 distribution boards in place whilst upgrading their capability and meeting the ever-changing landscape of regulations.

Designed to detect and mitigate arc faults early, the KCM AFDD will reduce the risk of electrical fires, saving lives, protecting property, and ensuring compliance with evolving safety standards.

By addressing the challenges of trust and complexity, this AFDD has the potential to accelerate market adoption, enabling contractors and engineers to meet stricter safety requirements without compromising on quality or performance. As a result, the KCM AFDD is poised to play a transformative role in shaping a safer, more resilient electrical industry.

Key features and benefits include:

• Type A, single-pole module width for streamlined installation.

• All 10 Ka rated.

• Available in multiple ratings: 6, 10, 16, 20, 32, and 40 A.

• Tripping characteristics Curves B & C, offering flexibility for different applications.

• Switched neutral design, ensuring enhanced safety and reliability.

• Fits seamlessly into Memera 2000, AD & AM single-phase boards plus MEMSHIELD 2 TPN steel distribution boards.

• Built-in Bluetooth functionality – utilised via an App, this tells you which type of fault has occurred, as well as providing details of previous historic events.

• Trip indication flags – through the use different colour LEDs the unit will indicate a range of eight specific faults, including both AF & RCBO for quick and easy fault diagnosis.
