Activate Learning launches Electrical AM2 Assessment Centre at Guildford Campus

Guildford College, part of Activate Learning, is delighted to launch a new Electrical Installation Assessment Centre at Guildford College.

Known as the AM2 Assessment Centre, the facility is based at the college which is a licensed National Electrotechnical Training (NET) centre authorised to deliver NET assessments for electrical apprentices and trainees.

This brand-new facility, located on the top floor of the college’s Technology Tower, includes four installation bays and two fault finding bays to complete assessments, as well as close links to the A3/M25 and Guildford Railway Station.

Pete Mellor, AM2 Centre Co-ordinator at Guildford College, said: “The new Guildford AM2 centre is a welcome addition to the thriving electrical department at Guildford College as it completes the required set of courses and assessments, that are required for electrical installation trainees and apprentices to become fully qualified.

They will now be able to take their AM2 assessment closer to home in a brand-new facility and we are looking forward to helping them achieve their career ambitions.”

The main benefit for local electricians is that they will no longer need to travel to AM2 centres in Southampton or Crawley to update their certificates, saving them time and money.

An industry recognised trade test controlled by NET, the purpose of the AM2 assessment is to ensure all qualified electricians achieve a single standard that has been agreed by employers in the industry. The AM2 assessment is for electrical apprentices/trainees who are training against the Apprenticeship Framework or those who are on an Experienced Worker Programme. For those training against the Apprenticeship Standard, the AM2S must be taken.

Both the AM2 and the AM2S assessments are carried out over two and a half days in the centre, covering practical elements and underpinning knowledge of electrical installation procedures, including health and safety, practical installation, fault finding and an online multiple-choice knowledge exam.

Peter Arrow of local company Arrow and Son, said: “The AM2 Centre is a perfect opportunity for candidates to show their practical competence, covering a range of disciplines, in exam conditions. This further demonstrates the capability of the individual to work to a high standard under pressure.”
