Deadline extended for popular management course

SELECT has extended the enrolment deadline for its upcoming Effective Manager Programme, run in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University.

The year-long programme is aimed at electrical managers or supervisors who want to develop their leadership and communication skills and enhance their company’s performance.

Due to growing interest, the deadline for the next intake, which starts in September, has now been extended to 28 August.

Lee Welsh, a self-employed electrician with the G1 Group, is among the SELECT Members who have successfully completed the course. He said: “It has made me better at what I’m currently doing. I’ve always known my own job, but when we have project management meetings I now have an insight into what the others around the table are focused on, and I’m comfortable with the terms they’re using. Being a manager is a trade in itself. This course is 100% beneficial and I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Neil Stout, from P&A Electrical in Edinburgh, echoed Lee’s praise. He said: “I’ve changed through the course and become more open to ideas, which is very helpful. Three months ago I had no interest in doing more, now I’m open to more courses. You need to want to do it, but I enjoy learning and this course has been beneficial.”

SELECT’s own staff are among those who have taken the class – and they’re also full of support for what it can help achieve.

Jenny Cryans, Training Coordinator at SELECT, said: “I wanted to get better understanding, advise members better and improve my own managerial skills. Management is a key skill and the course gives everyone a chance to reflect on how to do it better.”

The practice‐based programme, which has been running successfully for 12 years, offers a practitioner-focused learning experience, giving an opportunity to apply existing knowledge and experience to develop and grow both personally and professionally, and leads to the award of a Certificate of Management Practice.

The programme is designed to fit around a full-time job, with just nine class days required, with a full synopsis available here.

The total cost is £1,905 + VAT per person, but an Electrical Engineering Training Foundation (EETF) grant of £1,150 per person is available for a maximum of two students per SELECT Member company.
