BS 7671 requires every electrical installation to be designed. The designer of the installation also has a requirement to certify the design is compliant with BS 7671 by signing the Electrical Installation Certificate. As part of an electrical installation, the required cross-sectional area of the live conductors and the cross-sectional area of protective conductors must be calculated. An alternative to this is to use Standard Circuits as tabulated in the IET On-Site Guide or the IET Guidance Note 1 (Selection & Erection).
