Get ‘Gold Card’ status with LCL Awards’ new qualification

LCL Awards has launched a new qualification designed to provide experienced domestic electricians with a clear and credible pathway to formal recognition, including ‘Gold Card’ status and entry onto a relevant Competent Persons Scheme (CPS).

The Level 3 Award in Electrotechnical Work in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification (DEWQ) will shortly be available at LCL Awards approved centres across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Developed in response to the needs of the electrotechnical sector, the DEWQ recognises the knowledge, skills and competence of electricians who have worked in domestic environments but may not have completed a traditional apprenticeship or gained a full NVQ.

Neill Ovenden, Operations Director for LCL Awards, said: “Many domestic electricians have valuable skills and experience, but lack formal qualifications. Our new DEWQ provides the opportunity to gain recognition in-line with current industry standards, supporting individuals in career progression, while ensuring the ongoing development and safety of the workforce at large.”

Supporting competence in the sector

Aligned with the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS), the Domestic Electrician – Experienced Worker Assessment (TESP) and the requirements for competence in dwellings, the new Level 3 Award provides a robust assessment framework, offering a professional route to access the AM2ED end-point assessment which permits the learner to achieve ‘Gold Card’ status.

The DEWQ also supports entry into CPS’ and meets the growing industry demand for verified competence in domestic environments.

What does the DEWQ cover?

Built on current regulatory standards, the DEWQ includes:

  • Health & Safety at Work legislation
  • The Building Regulations (Part P)
  • BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations

Occupational competence is demonstrated through a portfolio of on-site evidence, which can be completed alongside an electrician’s day-to-day-work.

Who is the DEWQ for?

Eligible candidates must have at least three years’ experience working in domestic electrical installation and hold a recognised electrotechnical qualification of at least Level 2. An initial assessment must be undertaken at the point of application.

Driving standards, recognising talent

The launch of this qualification underlines LCL Awards’ continued commitment to raising industry standards and supporting individual progression within the electrotechnical workforce.

“It’s vital that those carrying out electrical work in people’s homes can prove they’re competent and up to date with current regulations,” said Neill. “This qualification offers an essential step forward for experienced workers who are ready to get formally recognised for what they already do — and do well.”
