As part of its growing commitment to drive its sustainability agenda, Scolmore Group created a new role within the organisation, with the aim of investing valuable resource to the area of sustainable manufacturing. Taking up the role of New Product Development and Research Manager is Surej Solanki, who has been part of the Scolmore Group product design team for the past three years.
In his new role, he will be taking responsibility for driving sustainability research initially with Scolmore Group company, Ovia Lighting. As part of this process, Surej is already making his mark having been accepted as a member of the Lighting Industry Association’s (The LIA) Tech Forum Young Industry Panel. Surej attended the recent Tech Forum Autumn event which had a wide-ranging agenda which covered updates on the Minimum Energy Performance Standard proposals by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, TM66 Assured, Sustainability Metrics, Remanufacture of Luminaires, presentations from influential guest speakers at OPSS and Lighting Europe Secretary General, a panel discussion, as well as technical updates on compliance and emergency lighting.
In his first contribution as a Tech Forum Young Industry panel member, Surej covered a number of topics including sustainability; TM66; what designers can do to tackle sustainability; viewing sustainability as something valuable which can provide a return on investment, and how to upskill the younger generation.
Commenting on his new role, Surej said: “I am really excited to have been given what I consider to be a dream role for me. Having founded my passion for product design and development 14 years ago, I am keen to drive sustainable practices and determined to create positive change in the manufacturing ecosystem. The Scolmore Group of companies already strives to ensure that all products are manufactured in compliance with all applicable Technical Standards. We also strongly believe that our long-term business success and continuous growth is only possible by operating responsibly and supporting the society in alignment with Universal Standards. This is why we pursue our growth in a sustainable way, by taking care of the well-being of our human capital, the communities in which we operate as well as the planet, in a compliant and responsible way.”
“In my role of New Product Development and Research Manager, I will be putting the focus on sustainable manufacturing and the creation of manufactured products through economically-sound processes that minimise negative environmental impacts while conserving energy and natural resources.”
