WernerCo steps up the fight against Covid-19

WernerCo, the leading access equipment specialist, has joined forces with TGS Automotive Services to support the UK’s Test and Trace programme by supplying Youngman® ladders to a fleet of converted mobile testing vans.

The vehicles have doubled the existing fleet of Test and Trace Mobile Testing Units (MTUs) to significantly increase the testing capacity to help identify COVID-19 amongst asymptomatic patients.

TGS was tasked with providing and delivering 500 specially adapted MTUs for the department of Health and Social Care within five months. As part of the project 1,000 ladders were required to be equipped onboard for workers and volunteers to easily and safely access the awnings fitted, which allow for drive through testing.

Denver Smith, Materials and Planning at TGS Automotive Group commented: “When we were tasked with delivering 500 fully kitted mobile testing vans within five months from design to completion, many in the industry thought it was not possible. Within days of a prototype being approved we had nearly 40 suppliers on board, committing to delivering materials and items to install before Christmas.

“This is where WernerCo came in. I worked with Paul Lycett and his team to ensure that all vans were equipped with two Youngman ladders. From start to finish he was extremely flexible and we didn’t miss a single delivery, even with the extremely tight turnaround time. It is really helpful having a supplier who you know is committed to the project and with this being such a crucial part of the Test and Trace effort WernerCo provided us with confidence and reassurance for their role within the project.”

The vans, which will be used all around the country, have significantly increased the asymptomatic testing capabilities to curb the spread of COVID-19. The vehicles have already been used for surge testing operations as well as providing Lateral Flow Tests for schools and airports, such as Heathrow and Gatwick.

The project was delivered in a tight time frame and was completed this spring. The vans featured two Youngman® Fibreglass Stepladders, which are ideal for professional use and are approved to the latest EN131 standard.
