Product Test: ESP Battery-Powered Wi-Fi Door Station

ESP teams up with PE to give one of our product testers, Adam Murray from Moray in Scotland, the chance to review its battery-powered Wi-Fi Door Station.

Features and Benefits:

Aimed at both the domestic and light commercial markets, the battery-powered Wi-Fi Door Station is quick and easy to install without the need for cabling.

It is powered by 4 x AA batteries and each kit comes with a battery-powered chime which can be placed in a convenient location in the home

It allows you to view and talk to visitors at your home whether you are on the premises or on the other side of the world Using the free ESP app, property owners will get alerts to visitors and can easily see who is at the door or gate, engage in two-way communication and allow remote access if desired.

The battery-powered Wi-Fi Door Station comes in a kit including the Wi-Fi door station, micro SD card, wireless door chime and all required batteries.

The Wi-Fi antenna is built into the main housing. The robust ABS housing and IP rating makes it weatherproof and suitable for many external applications.

The HD camera provides high definition colour images; video files of visitors are recorded onto the internal micro SD card

What attracted you to the product originally?

I’m a big fan of home automation and related technologies and when the opportunity came along to test the new Wi-Fi door station from ESP, I simply couldn’t pass on the offer. I was particularly interested to see how the door station would last on battery alone.

What was your first impression?

The door station was a good compact size – not too big and bulky. Although it’s made from plastic, it feels very durable and is IP rated, making it suitable for the type of coastal sea air that we get up in Scotland.

How easy was it to use?

As I’ve not used many of ESP’s products in the past I was struck by how simple it was to install and use. Once out of the box the instructions were easy to follow, and the product also comes with a security screwdriver to remove the security screws from the unit, which made things even faster and saved time hunting around for one in the toolbox.

Are there any particular features and benefits you enjoyed?

Most definitely! The unit as a whole – the fixing, set-up and configuration – took less than 20 minutes and was so easy to achieve. In terms of end-user performance the 720p camera provides a really clear, sharp picture and my customer has commented on the added peace of mind that it has provided.

Are there any improvements you’d suggest?

The instructions with the product could be a bit clearer when advising how to remove the mount bracket from the main unit. This wasn’t a big issue, however.

Would you recommend the product to other electricians?

Yes I would! If you have customers that want smart home technology and an extra layer of security for their homes, without the hassle of redecorating, then this product is ideal for them. It’s a great example of how technology is moving on in our day-to-day lives and suppliers are creating innovative and simple solutions to meet this demand.
