Made 2 Measure: What is the easiest way to carry out tests on lighting circuits?

Working on your own? Need some technical advice? Don’t know where to turn? The technical team at Megger answers the latest technical query from end users.

YOU ASK:

I OFTEN WASTE A LOT OF TIME WHEN I’M WORKING ON LIGHTING CIRCUITS BECAUSE I NEED TO TAKE THE FITTINGS OR LAMP HOLDERS APART TO GET AT THE CONNECTIONS TO CARRY OUT TESTS. SURELY THERE MUST BE AN EASIER WAY! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS?

MEGGER SAYS:

There is indeed an easier way. We suggest that you get hold of one of the new Megger LA-KIT lamp adaptor kits, which have been developed to solve exactly the problem you describe. The kit comes in a handy zipped carrying case and includes five adaptors to match all of the most commonly used types of lamp holders. These are B22 and B14 bayonet fittings, E27 and E14 screw fittings and GU10. The adaptors are really easy to use – you simply plug them in instead of the bulb. They have two standard 4 mm sockets for the test leads, and the LA-KIT even includes a two-wire 4 mm to 4 mm lead set. The E27 and E14 adaptors are colour-coded to show polarity, but because they can be plugged in either way round, colour-coding isn’t possible for the other adaptors. The lamp adaptor kit is inexpensive, and it will save you a lot of time and trouble. You’ll be especially glad to have it when you’re working at height, where plugging in an adaptor is a lot simpler and safer than trying to dismantle a lamp holder or fitting!
