The LED is undoubtedly today’s most efficient method of illumination and lighting, with an estimated energy efficiency of 80 to 90% compared to traditional lighting. As the glow of the traditional fluorescent batten fades, the LED batten is the perfect replacement, providing increased efficiency and ultra-low energy consumption compared to the older lighting technology.
The benefits of LED lighting are becoming widely appreciated by the end-user. Although initially more expensive to buy than its outmoded fluorescent predecessor, the LED batten can last 10 times longer and its extended life span can provide huge long-term savings.
A slimmer future
Since the introduction of LEDs into the UK market, we’ve seen an increased trend for the old-style batten to be replaced with a slimmer model. Its compact dimensions are ideal for a contemporary interior. The slimline batten is compact and stylish and provides fantastic brightness, making it the perfect low energy lighting solution for the domestic new-build market.
The Mark Lighting range of slimline LED battens are double insulated, have an aluminium body with PVC diffuser, and are an easy two wire installation. The batten provides 90 to 95 lumens per watt and is available in three sizes – 4ft, 5ft and 6ft – all available in 4000k, plus the 5ft is also available in 6500k.
Not always a slim fit
While the slimline batten caters for current lighting tastes, it can be problematic for the replacement market. Replacing an existing fluorescent batten with one of the new slimline LED battens is not always an exact fit.
The slimline light fitting is much narrower than your typical pop pack fluorescent batten, creating additional work to cover and paint around the new fitting. This can be a particularly time-consuming task in a commercial setting, where hundreds of light fittings are being replaced.
Commercial lighting solutions
Listening to customer feedback, it became clear that a thicker-style LED batten was required for commercial use. Replacing a fluorescent batten with a commercial LED batten has all the benefits of its slimline counterpart – in terms of brightness and energy efficiency – but its dimensions are a better match.
