ECS announces launch of Cellular Network Field Engineer card

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) has announced the launch of a Cellular Network Field Engineer card to complement the development of the apprenticeship of the same title.

The role of a Cellular Network Field Engineer is to develop, maintain and optimise cellular network and its infrastructure within a highly regulated and controlled environment. Cellular Network Field Engineers lead installation of complete wireless mobile solutions, including complex DC and AC electrical systems, fibre cabling, active radio modules and multi-mode fibre systems. This person will usually act as a technical lead within communications and rigging teams and will be capable of independent working (unless in a safety critical role such as working at heights which requires a minimum of two qualified persons).

To be eligible for a Cellular Network Field Engineer card, applicants must have successfully completed the Level 4 Cellular Network Field Engineer apprenticeship standard, and hold a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment or exemption.

Andy Train, Chair of the apprenticeship trailblazer group, said: β€œThe Cellular Network Field Engineer trailblazer will provide the cellular industry long overdue standardisation, cementing a foundation to permit young talented people to enter a fast moving and ever evolving industry sector. It will ensure the industry is safeguarded for the future with highly skilled engineers. It will also enable us to stabilise structures to ensure forecasting can be established bringing a long overdue era of stability for both employer and employee.”

Andy Reakes, Director of Growth and DevelopmentΒ for the Joint Industry Board (JIB) and ECS, commented: β€œECS and JIB continue to work with industry partners to create clear career routes into the many sectors that make up the electrotechnical industry. Apprenticeships play a vital role in ensuring the workforce is made up of highly skilled engineers who can complete jobs to the required high standard thanks to the qualification and competence structures established by industry.”

The organisations involved in developing this standard include Mitie Telecoms, Vodafone, Erisson, 8Point8 Training and Cornerstone.
