Product Test: The Unilite SLR-3000 work light

Steve Hewish, Approved Electrician for Turrell (Electrical Contractors), goes in search of some light inspiration this month as he tries out the Unilite SLR-3000 work light.

In all of the jobs that I undertake – from installation work to electrical condition reports – I’m almost always faced with working environments that are dark or dimly lit.

To help overcome these challenges I originally started off with a Unilite PS-HDL2 head torch, which I’ve found is brilliant for close working but not always ideal for large work areas.

As such I was keen to give Unilite’s SLR-3000 work light a trial run.

This unit is ideal if you’re looking to light up any work area, whether it be a small cupboard or the back of a large building.

In addition to its dimming capabilities of 50% or full brightness, the usability of the product is amazing, requiring the user to understand just two simple buttons.

The floodlight has a rugged rubberised handle and is lightweight so it’s easy to carry and use, even if you have a lot of tools to transport. The battery pack from the unit is removable, which is handy for charging or to use the inbuilt USB port for phone charging.

One thing I particularly like about this site light is the four very strong magnets that allow you to secure the floodlight to anything magnetic – particularly handy for the outside of vehicles, use in plant rooms, on air ducting or large control panels.

Another benefit of the product is the run time of six hours on 50% light output, which compares very strongly to the four hours run time I’ve had from the other two ‘competitor’ floodlights I’ve used before.

Due to the run time I’d always recommend either having a second SLR-3000 in your kit or an extra battery pack for a long day. A vehicle charging adaptor isn’t included, however I hear Unilite are bringing one out soon which will be useful when you’re somewhere without power (as I regularly am).

All in all this is definitely another successful addition to the Unilite stable. The SLR-3000 is not just ideal for electricians, it’s great for all trade-related professionals.

I’ve used the light on night time streetlight call-outs, domestic light fitting changes and commercial panel board inspections and can safely say that it stands up to all tasks – big or small.
