Product Test: Dickies Workwear Range

PE recently got sent a nice package from Dickies containing some of the company’s latest workwear. Find out how we got on with the Somerton Waterproof Suit and Faxon Trainer in this product review.

When going out on a job, appearance counts for a lot. Making the right impression is so important, especially when you’re meeting a client for the first time. A spark that looks the part will often be one that’s confident and takes great pride in their work.

Dickies is well renowned in workwear circles and popular with electricians. With more than 90 years’ experience in workwear manufacturing, it’s safe to say the brand knows its stuff when it comes to producing quality work apparel for a whole host of trades.

From jackets, hoodies, hardwearing trousers and shorts, Dickies has all your garment needs covered. With the odd weather we’ve been having of late, it was a good job that with the Faxon Trainer, they also sent us some waterproofs from the Somerton range along with the Eisenhower shorts, Anvil polo and a nice selection of tees.

Faxon Trainer
Workwear shoes aren’t renowned for their good looks, but the Faxon Trainer is on the stylish side. The first thing I thought when I saw them was ‘hiking’. Now, I’m not suggesting for one minute you go mountaineering in them, but at first glance it’s clear to see Dickies took inspiration from the hiking model.

Dickies-Faxon-JuneMade from Nubuck leather, the Faxon comes in two colourways – grey/black like the ones in this test and camel/black. I love a suede shoe so I was instantly drawn to these thanks to the Nubuck material which looks and feels very much like suede.

The composite toe-cap lets you know you’re wearing a safety shoe and the breathable mesh lining makes for a comfortable and pleasant fit which is crucially important when out on a job.

Eisenhower Premium Short (pictured above)
Water repellent and oil resistant, the Eisenhower short is perfect for those warmer days on-site. You can’t help but notice the various pockets and compartments on this garment. There are pockets for your pens, screwdrivers, leveller and torch making it ideal for those of you seeking comfort and convenience and let’s face it, which spark isn’t.

I really like the two zip off angled holster pockets, reinforced with Cordura. It’s simple to do away with the holster pockets thanks to the YKK zip mechanism. It’s just as easy to secure them back on, simply link the zips and then clip the two buttons.

Anvil Polo Shirt
As I stated earlier, appearance counts for a lot. If you don’t Dickies-Polos-Junehave a company uniform, a smart polo shirt says professional tradie just as much as one embossed with a company logo. Not only does the Anvil Polo Shirt look the part, it’s also comfortable.

I really like how Dickies has subtlety implemented two contrasting colours in the design. I’m sporting the black polo, with the blue bands on the arms, tip of the collar and inside of the button placket, but there are two other options available on the Dickies website – blue and grey.

Somerton Waterproof Suit
It’s officially British summer time and while I can’t guarantee you sun, I can guarantee rain. Don’t worry Dickies-Somerton-Junethough, Dickies has you covered, literally, thanks to the Somerton Waterproof Suit – jacket and trouser combo. We all know water and sparks don’t agree, but you guys need protecting from the elements when the weather turns.

The Somerton Waterproof Suit is 100% polyester so you can be sure that your undergarments will be protected from the rain when you’re out on an inspection. This two-part suit features an adjustable hood with waterproof zips and internal pockets. The bottoms also comprise some handy features including an elasticated waistband and zippers at the ankle allowing you to slide into the trousers like you would a pair of overalls.

Five Pack T-shirts
T-shirts are a real winner, especially during the summer Dickies-Tshirts-Junemonths. Dickies has put together a nice selection of logo tees in this five-pack set. Including some of the company’s trademark emblems and slogans, and available in an array of sizes – from small through to triple XL – you’re guaranteed to find a size and style that’s right for you.

Personally, I like the black T-shirt that I’m sporting. Etched with the ‘Quality and Durability’ motto, like all of the tees in the selection, they offer great comfort and versatility. It’s recommended you wash them normally, with similar colours, but they’re not suitable for the tumble dryer.
