LED Kits breathe new life into existing luminaires
Glamox is enabling Mowi, one the largest seafood companies in the world, to transform its existing fluorescent luminaires into highly energy-efficient LED luminaires at its fish feed production facility in Valsneset, Norway. By using LED Kits, Mowi is replacing each luminaire’s light source, electronics, and optics while reusing the existing luminaire’s housing. This environmentally friendly approach will result in substantial energy and cost savings, and keep Mowi ahead of the Europe-wide phase-out of fluorescent lighting.
Mowi has around 20% of the global market for farmed salmon and is the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon with harvest volumes of 475,000 tonnes in 2023. It is also a pioneer in sustainable fish food and has its fish feed granules production facility on the coast at Valsneset. Mowi Feed Norway produced 400,000 tonnes of fish feed in 2023. Its factory and warehouses until recently were equipped with linear fluorescent luminaires.
Phase out of fluorescent lighting
The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive that phases out fluorescent lighting in Europe, coupled with Mowi’s desire to save electricity, is seeing the company replace its T5 and T8 fluorescent luminaires with more than 900 GPV2 LED Kits. These are being installed in the production facility and warehouses.
In addition, the quayside area is equipped with one unloader and two loaders. The 30-metre-high unloader, which unloads raw materials from ships, is equipped with two Glamox RLX D FL 240W100-3QEABK RLX floodlights and 30 impact-resistant water-tight linear MIR luminaires. The two loaders are used for loading vessels with finished feed products from the warehouses. Each loader is equipped with one Glamox RLX D FL floodlight and 15 MIR luminaires. Four Max explosion-proof luminaires have also been installed on the jetty where there is an LNG refuelling station.
“The LED Kits are an environmentally friendly way to switch to LED. They reuse the bodies of our lighting fixtures which also means less time is spent on installation. We installed the kits ourselves. They’re an easy-to-fit preassembled product designed for a circular economy. Best of all, our lights now consume 60% less electricity than our previous fluorescent lights,” said Ragnar Meland, Electrical Supervisor at Mowi Feed.
“Before, we struggled with the lifetime of the fluorescent tubes which also took time to warm up as the environment is cold. Now we get instant light and the long life of the LED technology means lower maintenance costs. The lights on each floor of the production building are equipped with motion sensors and mechanical timers that we set up for a maximum of four hours. Simple is often the best way to go and our warehouses are now equipped with the same solution,” added Meland.
Sustainability is core to Mowi’s strategy. Its science-based targets involve reducing its total (Scope 1, 2, and 3) greenhouse gas emissions by 35% until 2030 and 72% until 2050.
“The switch to LED will help Mowi to reduce its carbon footprint and eliminate any potential for disruption from the phase-out of fluorescent luminaires. We estimate that in Norway alone, more than 10 million fluorescent luminaires will need replacing in the coming years due to the EU directive that came into full force last summer,” said Toril Bache Jenssen, Director of Sales for Glamox in Norway.
